As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for Week 1, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is obviously being held out of preseason play to no one's surprise. The reps he's getting in practice are going to be more than enough, and at his age, he won't risk the injury.
Speaking of practice reps with his wide receivers, the Steelers are also looking at signing another one late in the game. In what would qualify more as a last-minute signing before Week 1 kicks off, Pittsburgh is meeting with veteran wideout Gabe Davis. But, Davis is also scheduled to meet with the team that drafted him.
Yes, the Buffalo Bills are going to meet with Davis as well, just a year after they let him go and sign a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Davis was released from Jacksonville earlier this year in May and has yet to find his next permanent home for 2025.
Gabe Davis might be the perfect fit for Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers
The former fourth-round pick made a name for himself strictly out of his ability to make big plays. He was never the most crisp route runner, nor would he be the one you'd look for in crunch time on a 3rd-and-7 late in the game.
Davis isn't one of those players who will come up big in those moments, most of the time. However, if he is paired next to someone like DK Metcalf and the Steelers want to get creative with some deeper routes, Davis is your guy. He has the elite speed and size to be a deep threat.
You could call him a one-trick pony and you wouldn't be wrong, actually. But, for a quarterback like Rodgers who has made a living on eye-popping Hail Mary highlights over his career, Davis isn't a bad pickup at all. It isn't far fetched to think that, the moment Davis signed in Pittsburgh, he'd have a roster spot.
This is the kind of signing the Steelers should make after going all-in on Rodgers, too. Give him guys he wants and is comfortable with (just please, God, not Allen Lazard or Randall Cobb).
All jokes aside, Davis would be a welcomed addition to this offense and would carve out a specialized role in no time.
