Steelers would be wise to wait a year to draft Russell Wilson's replacement

It might be best for the Steelers to draft a quarterback in 2026 when Pittsburgh hosts the event.

Pittsburgh should expect a newly invented quarterback room by the time next season starts. Yes, the Steelers still have to get through the rest of this campaign, which will hopefully see them make some noise in the playoffs. Looking at the future though, it seems obvious that the Steelers will work to re-sign Russell Wilson as soon as the year ends. Both Justin Fields and Kyle Allen are on expiring deals.

Even though they will likely re-sign Wilson to a two to three-year extension, he is still getting old. Who knows when his body will fail him, and he will be forced into retirement. With that being said, the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft does not have many good options at the quarterback position. The Steelers might be better off waiting until the 2026 draft which they will be hosting in Pittsburgh.

Drew Allar, Penn State

He shocked some draft evaluators recently after announcing he would skip the upcoming draft and return for another year at Penn State. Drew Allar is in a good spot in terms of development, but he would be seen as a project if he entered the draft this year. He has all the traits that every NFL team is looking for in a franchise quarterback. Allar would be a terrific option to learn and develop behind Wilson.

Arch Manning, Texas

In a world of college football that is run by players, Arch Manning is different. He has worked his way up the ranks at Texas and will become their full-time starter next season. Manning is old school, so maybe he will finish his college career the year after next to graduate before going pro. He is the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, so the Steelers would love to have that bloodline on their club.

Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee

He was a big-time recruit when he signed with Tennessee, but he just wrapped up his first year of starting. For the most part, Nico Iamaleava did a respectable job. He plays in the SEC, which is heralded as the top college football conference. If he can continue his growth through next season with the Volunteers, then the Steelers and the rest of the NFL will be intrigued by the dual threat.

LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina

One of the quarterbacks in the potential 2026 class with enormous upside is South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers. He is another young quarterback prospect who would be going into the draft after starting two years in the SEC similar to Iamaleava. Sellers might be average height for an NFL prospect, but he is a tank running the ball. He provides a unique body style to this potential draft class.

Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

One prospect many thought would enter this year's draft was Garrett Nussmeier. He has a ton of tools that make scouts interested in his game. For one reason or another LSU and Nussmeier didn't have the season they wanted. They are hoping that they can regroup this offseason and make a push for a Championship next year. Nussmeier has a lot to work with and would be a nice pickup for the Steelers.
