When the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson with the 83rd overall pick on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft, many fans wondered why the team passed on two available quarterback prospects—Shedeur Sanders and Jalen Milroe.
The decision to draft a running back over a potential franchise quarterback was surprising, but information suggests the pick may have been heavily influenced by one key figure: Aaron Rodgers.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Josina Anderson, Rodgers informed the Steelers of his 2025 season intentions 48 hours before the start of the draft. That report, combined with continued silence on selecting a quarterback through two days, strongly indicates his return—and likely playing in black and gold.

The choice of Johnson, a smooth, patient zone runner with shades of Le’Veon Bell, is by no means a wasted pick. Johnson is considered one of the most complete backs in this class. Still, with their only Day 2 selection, Pittsburgh had the rare opportunity to secure a long-term quarterback solution with Milroe and Sanders still on the board.
Instead, they passed—perhaps with good reason.
Kaleb Johnson's Instagram post hints Aaron Rodgers could sign with Pittsburgh Steelers
Adding fuel to the speculation, photos from Johnson’s Instagram story surfaced late Friday night, showing him working out alongside Aaron Rodgers. In the post, Rodgers can be seen resting between drills as Johnson prepares for his next rep.
Whether intentional or coincidental, the image sends a powerful message: this connection was no accident.
If Rodgers has been mentoring Johnson or working with him during the offseason, it explains the Steelers’ confidence in making the pick. It also suggests the franchise is building around Rodgers—not just for a ceremonial final season, but with an intent to win now.
It’s still possible for Pittsburgh to secure a developmental quarterback on Day 3, but their refusal to invest in Sanders or Milroe speaks volumes. The front office appears to be following a plan set in motion well before the draft began. Johnson fits that plan.
If Rodgers is officially back, the Steelers' focus may no longer desperately yearn for a high-value quarterback prospect.
Pittsburgh might not have missed at all. They may be two steps ahead.
