With more contract extensions approaching, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ already limited cap space could shrink even further. The roster appears solid heading into training camp, but there are still clear areas of weakness.

If the Steelers are serious about making a playoff push this season, they would be wise to explore free agency or evaluate potential trade targets to strengthen those spots.

Acquiring a player via trade may not be ideal for Pittsburgh, especially if the team is reluctant to part with 2027 draft capital. A deal becomes more realistic if the Steelers are willing to move a notable veteran from their roster to address a defensive weakness. Improving the inside linebacker position should be a priority, as leaving that need unresolved could hurt their chances later in the season.

Nick Bolton

It would not make much sense for the Chiefs to trade Nick Bolton, but his contract comes with a significant cost, and the team could use additional help on the edge. A swap involving Bolton and Alex Highsmith could be enough to move discussions in a productive direction. Bolton is an outstanding player who would provide an immediate boost.

However, completing a deal with a fellow AFC contender would be a risky gamble for Pittsburgh.

Henry To'oTo'o

Another AFC contender the Steelers could explore as a trade partner is Houston. While Houston eliminated Pittsburgh from the playoffs last year, it also gave the Steelers a close look at Henry To'oTo'o. He may not be a physically imposing linebacker, but he is a player who could help strengthen the roster. Trading him would not be an easy move for the Texans, but Pittsburgh could try.

Micah McFadden

An under-the-radar option to monitor is a player coming off an injury while adjusting to a new coaching staff, which often makes him a viable trade candidate.

The Steelers would be wise to make a few calls to determine whether Giants linebacker Micah McFadden is available. With several changes taking place in New York, there is a chance he could be acquired at a reasonable cost. McFadden has been highly productive, is still just 26 years old, and is entering the prime of his career.

Daiyan Henley

Daiyan Henley’s profile is beginning to rise across the NFL, making him another intriguing young option to monitor. He has the potential to emerge as a breakout star this season, and Pittsburgh should have interest in such a highly productive defender. Henley brings elite athleticism and could add a noticeable boost to the Steelers’ defense. Trading Highsmith would once again be their best path towards a move like this, however.

SirVocea Dennis

SirVocea Dennis may be the most realistic trade target on this list.

As a Pitt product, he is someone the Steelers showed interest in during the pre-draft process. His time in Tampa Bay has largely been spent in a backup role, but he began to break out last season with impressive production. Dennis is a young player on the rise and could likely be acquired without giving up a significant package in a trade.
