The Pittsburgh Steelers are notorious for possessing one of the league's classic uniforms, a look that hasn't changed since the NFL merger. Well, technically.
In 1997, the Steelers changed one aspect of their uniforms switching to italicized numbers that matched the numbers on the helmets. In recent years, the Steelers have begun wearing a throwback uniform that features the old block numbers.
Tonight, the Steelers will be facing a team with several looks to choose from in the wardrobe. The New York Jets wore throwback uniforms last week, though this season sparked a change to a classic look after a handful of seasons with a sleek modern design. The classic look for Gang Green has been lauded and appreciated by football fans.
Official Jersey Announcement for Tonight's Game
The Steelers announced on Tuesday they will break out the block number throwbacks on Sunday night against the Jets. Unlike previous iterations of the block throwbacks, this week the Steelers will also add grey facemasks to the uniform in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Steelers' first Super Bowl championship at Super Bowl IX.
The Steelers are 4-0 in their block number throwbacks dating back to 2018.
The Steelers will sport a bold look and so too will the New York Jets. The Jets announced on Friday they will wear their all-white combination for the contest with green helmets.
The Steelers have a strong record against the Jets at home wearing their standard home uniforms, though it would appear the Steelers haven't lost to the Jets while wearing block numbers on black jerseys in the regular season as the Steelers beat the Jets at home four times from 1970 to 1992.
The Jets didn't get their first win in Pittsburgh until 2010 and have only gotten one other since, back in 2022, their most recent meeting in the Steel City.
