The Pittsburgh Steelers head into their Sunday night matchup with the New York Jets with a 4-2 record and a massive question mark at quarterback.

It's a bit of a surprise, as Justin Fields has performed admirably in his first six starts as a Pittsburgh Steeler. The presumptive future of the position in Pittsburgh completed 66% of his passes for 1,106 yards with five touchdowns to just one interception, all of which are on pace for career-best marks. He's also added 231 yards and five scores on the ground.

However, Fields was never named the starter. Russell Wilson was signed in free agency and was quickly named the starter. While there was a "battle" in the preseason, the understanding was that Wilson would be the Steelers' initial starter at quarterback.

A calf injury derailed those plans, opening the door for Fields to take over the position. Now that Wilson is 100% healed of the calf injury, Mike Tomlin has a decision to make for his offense - which has shown improvement but still lags behind league averages in most categories.

Russell Wilson Will Make His Steelers Debut on Sunday Night Football

Mike Tomlin announced early in the week that Russell Wilson would receive first-team reps in practice throughout the week, but declined to name a starter for the Sunday night contest against the New York Jets.

Throughout the week, Tomlin held firm that the decision at quarterback would be made based on practice. On Friday, he doubled down and said the decision would be kept in-house.

Less than an hour later, George Pickens was asked about possibly taking extra reps after practice with Wilson and let loose that Wilson would be the starter Sunday night.

Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero confirmed that Wilson would be the starter, though fans should expect to see both quarterbacks during the game.

Fans and analysts alike have questioned the decision to go with Wilson all week, citing Fields's progress as an individual and within the offense. Wilson may have the veteran experience and a Super Bowl ring on his resume, but the years were not kind to him in Denver and now a mid-season first start against New York could come with some rust.

While Wilson may find receivers and deliver more accurate passes, there's no doubt that Fields' athleticism saved many drives for Pittsburgh's offense that would have otherwise been disrupted by sacks by way of a young, inexperienced offensive line.

Wilson lacks the mobility of his early years in the league and may be in for a rough night if he can't deliver his passes with the same quickness his opposing quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, certainly will.
