So long Beard

While we were all bracing for what might happen with Troy Polamalu we kind of forgot about what other Steelers players were facing the potential end of their Black & Gold careers. The Steelers announced Monday afternoon that they had informed defensive end Brett Keisel that he would be released from the team.

Keisel played 13 seasons for the Steelers between 2002-2014 and compiled 30 sacks, 36 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions, one of which was returned 79 yards for a touchdown. I was at that game in Tampa in 2010 when Keisel returned an interception and took it to the house. It was an awesome moment.

Love you too Keisel!

No news means…?

Earlier on Monday the Steelers released a statement on the future of Troy Polamalu that said…they have nothing to say. Here is the statement from the Steelers website.

"“At this time, we do not have an update on Troy Polamalu or his contract status. We will continue to communicate with Troy and his representatives regarding his future.” – Kevin Colbert"

Ok. Thanks for the update? What is that supposed to mean exactly? Why release a statement stating there’s nothing to say? It seems very odd. Perhaps Troy isn’t returning the Steelers’ calls and they’re trying to force his hand?

Making moves

The Steelers had a busy Monday on the eve of the official start of the free agency period. They signed tight end Matt Spaeth to a two-year contract and linebacker Arthur Moats to a three-year deal. They didn’t stop there.

Before the end of the “business day” the Steelers had tendered offers to all three of their restricted free agents; cornerback Antwon Blake, safety Robert Golden and fullback Will Johnson. The tenders are for $1.542 million, according to the PPG’s Ed Bouchette. The tenders allow the Steelers to match any contract offers any of them might receive elsewhere.

The Steelers offered the lowest tender for the group of restricted free agents but it would be a significant pay increase for each of the players.
