The NFL free agency period is in full swing and you can bet that we won’t miss a beat of Steelers coverage. While the Steelers are releasing players, signing free agents, restructure and extending contracts and re-signing their own free agents we’ll be busy looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Friday, March 13th.

Whatcha gonna do with that space?

The Steelers haven’t been completely dormant since the free agency period began on Tuesday. They’ve finally completed the restructure of Maurkice Pouncey’s contract to save them an additional $3.8 towards the salary cap this year. They’re now almost $8 million under the cap now with no free agents signed as of yet.

They do have DeAngelo Williams coming to visit today. Also there’s this little nugget from Jason La Canfora.

Giving Troy some space

According to ESPN’s Scott Brown, the Steelers are giving Troy Polamalu the time he needs to decide what his next move will be. Troy’s agent, Marvin Demoff, reached out to ESPN to release the following statement:

"“The Steelers are giving Troy the space and time he needs to make a decision that is very respectful of his 12 years with the organization.” – Marvin Demoff, Troy Polamalu’s agent"

With being almost $8 million under the salary cap at this point and if Troy hasn’t made up his mind yet, the Steelers aren’t in any hurry or immediate need to force a move on Polamalu’s part. They’re showing some real patience here letting him mull over the decision to retire or play.

Steelers at Pro Days

The Steelers sent coach Mike Tomlin and linebackers coach Joey Porter to the University of Kentucky on Thursday for their Pro Day. The team is looking at OLB Bud Dupree, the top-rated pass rusher projected in the NFL Draft. Dupree was the team captain last year for the Wildcats and led the SEC in sacks for his college career.

Dupree would be a good addition to the Steelers defense, especially if their goal was to really get younger, they’d have Jarvis Jones entering his third year on one side and Dupree on the other with possibly James Harrison in the mix somehow? We’ll see.
