The NFL free agency period is in full swing and you can bet that we won’t miss a beat of Steelers coverage. While the Steelers are releasing players, signing free agents, restructure and extending contracts and re-signing their own free agents we’ll be busy looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Sunday, March 15th.

More from Steelers Free Agency

Steelers hosting Robinson

According to ESPN’s Scott Brown the Steelers are bringing in free agent cornerback Patrick Robinson for a visit on Monday. Robinson played 14 games for the New Orleans Saints last season where he had two interceptions on eleven passes defended. Robinson is a former first round draft pick out of Florida State in 2010.

The Steelers have been relatively inactive through the beginning of free agency but appear to be full of activity now. After losing Brice McCain to the Miami Dolphins last week the Steelers have just three corners on the roster with NFL experience at this point.

Terms of Ben’s deal

The Steelers announce late Friday afternoon the news we’ve been waiting to hear for quite some time; that they and Ben Roethlisberger have agreed to a new contract extension. The terms of the contract weren’t immediately released, kind of proving that the Steelers are a different kind of organization that doesn’t really care how fast things move on social media; they’re going to do things their own way in their own time.

CBS Sports Jason La Canfora reports that the Steelers effectively signed Roethlisberger to a new five-year contract, which basically serves as a four-year extension keeping him with the team through 2019. But, the five-year deal replaces the final year of his previous deal and will earn him a base of $99 million with the potential of a maximum of $108 million over the course of the five years and give Roethlisberger a $21.9 million per year average.

What a week

Teresa Varley breaks down the free agency action from the Steelers for the first week of free agency. What started with quiet has ended with a bang. The Steelers re-signed TE Matt Spaeth and LB Arthur Moats, tendered offers to their restricted free agent and then the first departure came. The Steelers release DE Brett Keisel after thirteen seasons.

Keisel wasn’t the only departure; the Steelers also lost CB Brice McCain to free agency when he signed with the Miami Dolphins and LB Jason Worilds shocked the NFL world when he decided to retire rather than test free agency. The Steelers then made up for their days of inactivity with the announcement that they signed Ben Roethlisberger to a new five-year contract and on the same day signed RB DeAngelo Williams to a two-year deal.
