Steelers Bringing in CB’s, Get to Know DeAngelo, On the Line

The NFL free agency period is in full swing and you can bet that we won’t miss a beat of Steelers coverage. While the Steelers are releasing players, signing free agents, restructure and extending contracts and re-signing their own free agents we’ll be busy looking around for mentions of your Black & Gold. Here’s your Steelers Morning Huddle for Tuesday, March 17th.

Bringing on the defensive backs

The Steelers are hosting some cornerbacks for visits this week, per ESPN’s Scott Brown. On Monday the team met with Patrick Robinson, formerly of the New Orleans Saints. Tuesday the team plans to meet with free agent cornerback Sterling Moore.

The Steelers now have four corners on the roster with NFL experience now that Antwon Blake signed his one-year $1.542 million restricted free agent tender. Incidentally, the other two restricted free agents (Will Johnson and Robert Golden) signed their tenders as well. Moore is a former teammate of offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum at SMU and played in 16 games last season for the Dallas Cowboys.

Get to know DeAngelo

Teresa Varley brings us some info to help Steeler Nation get to know the newest edition to the running back corps. DeAngelo Williams is known throughout the league for his support of breast cancer awareness, wearing everything from pink shoes to pink dreads. Williams lost his mother, Sandra, to breast cancer last May at just 53 years old. He’s also lost four aunts to the disease.

Williams wrote a piece for MMQB.com following his mother’s death and requested people wear a pink shirt once a month, not just in October, and to remind people why you’re wearing pink. He also urges people to reach out to the women in their lives (at least five in honor of his mother and her four sisters) and encourage them to get a mammogram. He’s a hard to not like. Kind of the Anti-Blount so far.

A lot on the line

The defensive line could be the strongest it’s been in a while with Cameron Heyward, Steve McLendon and Stephon Tuitt leading the way. As Gerry Dulac of the PPG points out, the problem lies behind them. The backups behind the front three are Cam Thomas, who was horrid last season and could potentially still get cut at some point, and Daniel McCullers, who was inactive the first six games last year but definitely improved throughout his playing time.

The Steelers are trying to return to the days of collapsing pockets and putting pressure on quarterbacks. They need a stout defensive line to achieve that.
