Change is something few people embrace, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have embodied that reality for quite some time. After being forced to make a head coaching change this offseason, the organization has tried to maintain a sense of familiarity by keeping faces like Aaron Rodgers in the picture.

Once the 2026 season comes to a close, however, it would not be surprising to see the Steelers make bold changes.

A new era in Pittsburgh feels inevitable, regardless of who takes over as the starting quarterback in 2027. With several contracts coming due, some fan favorites could be pushed out, forcing the organization into difficult decisions. These players may be safe for now, but that sense of security could quickly fade over the next year.

Pittsburgh Steelers could be saying goodbye to several fan favorites after the season

Pat Freiermuth, TE

Much of Pat Freiermuth’s long term future with the team will depend on how he is used this season.

Darnell Washington is also due for a new contract, and a potential pay raise for him could put Freiermuth’s standing in Pittsburgh in question. Freiermuth remains a fan favorite, which would make any decision to move on from him difficult. However, he has not been fully utilized in the Steelers' offense to this point, and if that trend continues, the team may feel compelled to move on.

Patrick Queen, LB

He is set to become a free agent after the season, and many questioned his place on the roster leading up to the NFL Draft. Patrick Queen found himself in frequent trade speculation this offseason, but he appears likely to suit up for Pittsburgh this year. While he would likely welcome a contract extension, his inconsistent production clouds his long-term outlook with the team.

Broderick Jones, OT

Just as things seemed to stabilize for Broderick Jones, he suffered a significant neck injury. If he is not ready by the start of the regular season, his role as a starter could already be in jeopardy. The Steelers declined his fifth-year option, which signals they may be ready to move on.

While Jones could still hold a roster spot in Pittsburgh this season, his chances of starting appear to be slipping away.

Alex Highsmith, EDGE

After this season, Pittsburgh will face a difficult decision of choosing between Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig. At the moment, Herbig looks like the more likely choice, as the young rising star is already seeking a new contract. Highsmith brings more experience and has a stronger track record, but age could work against him. This season will serve as a proving ground for both players.

Aaron Rodgers, QB

Rodgers has already claimed that he will retire following the 2026 season, but he made similar, albeit less direct, comments before last season as well.

The future Hall of Famer remains their best chance to compete this year, even as two young quarterbacks wait for their opportunity. Unless Rodgers turns back the clock and delivers a Super Bowl victory, both sides should look to move on in 2027.
