Losing Calvin Austin III in free agency should not significantly hinder the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it could eventually become a concern. While the team has done a solid job retooling its wide receiver group, it now lacks a true speedster.
Although the offense received several upgrades this offseason, Austin’s elite quickness is a skill set that may be difficult to replace and could emerge as a noticeable weakness.
The NFL continues to evolve into a league driven by speed and agility, which were among Austin’s strongest attributes. With few viable free agents remaining who can replicate that level of quickness, the Steelers have limited options at the moment. However, there is a potential solution in the United Football League. While he may not be on many fans’ radars right now, that could change quickly.
Pittsburgh is no stranger to signing talent from the UFL, having taken a similar approach with previous spring football leagues. It will be worth watching whether the Steelers choose to add another wide receiver to inject more speed into the group ahead of training camp. If that becomes the plan, bringing in K.J. Hamler from the United Football League could be their best option.
The Pittsburgh Steelers could target UFL WR K.J. Halmer to help replace Calvin Austin III
One of the main drawbacks shared by both Hamler and Austin is their lack of elite size at the position.
However, receivers who fall short in stature often compensate with speed, which is a strength both players possess. Coming out of the NFL Draft, Hamler recorded a blistering 4.27-second 40-yard dash during a workout. That time was actually faster than the former Steelers receiver, who posted a 4.32-second mark.
Believe it or not, Hamler is actually a year younger than Austin, despite being drafted two years earlier. While the UFL speedster is putting up impressive production, injuries have continued to hold him back. Much like the early stages of Austin’s career, Hamler’s development has been slowed by persistent health issues.
Unlike Austin, however, Hamler was never able to overcome those setbacks, which is why he is currently in the UFL while Austin remains on an NFL roster.
With Michael Pittman Jr., DK Metcalf, and Germie Bernard leading the wide receiver group, the Steelers should remain open to adding another offensive weapon. A player with elite, game-breaking speed could be the ideal complement to the current lineup. Hamler fits that profile, as he could inject much-needed explosiveness into the offense and some potential as a return specialist.
Hamler’s path back to the NFL depends largely on his ability to stay healthy. A former second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he possesses elite speed and could capitalize on another opportunity at the next level if the Steelers decide to bring him in.
Transitioning from Austin to Hamler would not be a bad move, provided the UFL standout can remain healthy and continue producing at a high level.
