Do not be surprised if the Pittsburgh Steelers use one of their early draft picks to add a wide receiver. They could even select multiple players at the position, as they are currently armed with a mind-boggling 12 picks. It is unlikely the team will use every selection, and it remains unclear how urgently they feel the need to add one or two additional playmakers.
Free agency could serve as Pittsburgh’s final contingency plan if the draft does not unfold as expected.
Even if the team enters the draft intending to address one of its more pressing needs, there is no guarantee the plan will succeed. The draft is unpredictable, and without a strong option available at their pick, they could choose to bypass the receiver position altogether. In that scenario, they may turn their attention to free agents who are still seeking an opportunity.
Pittsburgh Steelers WR backup plan for potential NFL Draft failure could be free agents
Jauan Jennings
One potential target for the Steelers is Jauan Jennings. He was linked to the team through trade speculation ahead of last season, but nothing ultimately came of it. It is somewhat surprising to see the veteran receiver still available in free agency. Jennings is a tough, physical blocker and has been a key contributor to San Francisco’s offense since 2021.
Money will be a major factor in determining where Jennings ultimately signs.
He remains one of the top free agents at his position and could still command a significant contract. While Pittsburgh has some cap space to work with, it likely would not be enough to match his current market value. If Jennings encounters a slower market and becomes a more affordable option, the Steelers would welcome the opportunity to add him to their roster after the draft.
Deebo Samuel
Jennings may be the top prize, but another former star flying under the radar in free agency is Deebo Samuel. He is only a few years removed from being one of the most sought-after playmakers in football. Unfortunately, Samuel’s career has not been as elite since parting ways with the 49ers. While his output has not completely fallen off, he has not been the same impact player he once was.
If the Steelers show interest, it would likely come only if they fail to address the position in the draft. The veteran proved he can still be productive during his time with the Commanders in 2025, though he started just 12 games. A reduced role alongside other capable receivers could suit him better at this stage. At the right price, Pittsburgh should have at least some level of interest.
JuJu Smith-Schuster
Fans would certainly welcome a reunion with JuJu Smith-Schuster. It has been quite some time since the former baby face of the franchise last wore the Black and Gold. Now entering his ninth NFL season, he could offer a valuable veteran presence to the receiver room. Even if the organization selects one or two receivers in the draft, there could still be room for Smith-Schuster on the roster.
Smith-Schuster is far removed from the days when he was labeled the next great receiver in Pittsburgh history. While he went on to have a solid career after leaving the Steelers, his most productive seasons came with his original team.
He is unlikely to approach 1,000 receiving yards per season at this stage, but he could still be a worthwhile free agent option to help patch some holes at the receiver position.
Brandin Cooks
Speed is an element the team has not fully utilized at the receiver position. While Brandin Cooks is advancing in age, he remains one of the faster players in the league. He is coming off a resurgent stint with the Buffalo Bills, though his speed has understandably declined over time. For the move to be effective, the Steelers would need to use him strategically, but Cooks remains a free agent target.
Failing to add a receiver in the draft would be a major disappointment, but signing Cooks later in free agency could help ease some concerns. He is unlikely to wow anyone at this stage of his career, but with DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. already in the mix, he would not need to. Pittsburgh simply needs a dependable playmaker who can deliver in critical moments.
