Steelers could swap Roman Wilson for a new weapon thanks to A.J. Brown fallout

Perhaps the Pats are ready to make another change with another WR.

Overall, it has been a positive start for wide receiver Roman Wilson under the Pittsburgh Steelers’ new coaching staff. The former third-round pick from 2024 has yet to deliver the success story many expected early in his career. He missed his entire rookie season due to injury, and last year he struggled to reach the level that many had projected.

This upcoming season will be critical for his long-term future with the organization.

With Mike McCarthy now in place, it appears Wilson may have an opportunity for a fresh start, but that is far from guaranteed. Aaron Rodgers will be his quarterback, and there was a noticeable disconnect between the veteran passer and Wilson last season. That lack of chemistry led the Steelers to bring in veterans late in the year, which pushed Wilson down the depth chart.

Depending on how things unfold, the New England Patriots could emerge as a potential trade partner for the Steelers.

After recently making a major move by acquiring A.J. Brown from the Eagles, New England may be more open to reshaping its wide receiver room, which could put Kayshon Boutte on the trade block. Roman Wilson may not carry significant value as a standalone trade asset, but a swap between the two teams could still be worth exploring if both sides see a fit.

Pittsburgh Steelers could trade Roman Wilson to New England for Kayshon Boutte

A potential trade centered around a swap of Roman Wilson and Kayshon Boutte would likely require Pittsburgh to include additional compensation. When comparing the two players’ careers, it becomes clear that Boutte has been the more productive wide receiver at the NFL level. He has appeared in 34 games, while Wilson has struggled to stay healthy and has played in just 13 games.

Wilson has struggled to stay on the field due to both injuries and inconsistent performance. Boutte, on the other hand, found some early success in his career, although he has not established himself as a true top wide receiver. His best season came last year, when he recorded 551 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

While those numbers are clearly stronger than Wilson’s production to this point, it would not be surprising if the Steelers wideout still possesses a higher long-term ceiling.

Putting together a meaningful trade package for the Patriots could be challenging, but after acquiring A.J. Brown, they may be more open to moving on from Kayshon Boutte. A deal centered on Roman Wilson, along with a mid-round pick swap, could be enough to draw their interest. In the end, it would not be a blockbuster move, but Boutte brings significantly more NFL experience to the table.

Pittsburgh has made it clear that it wants to compete this season, and if Wilson cannot prove he is at least the fourth-best receiver on the roster, it may be time to move on.

Boutte is a player who could provide more immediate help, especially if injuries begin to stack up. When you consider where both teams are at from a timeline perspective, it makes plenty of sense.
