Everyone is focused on Aaron Rodgers after he re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into OTAs. That attention is understandable, but it should not take away from other storylines emerging from within the team. Some intriguing developments in the quarterback room could impact the roster moving forward.
While news from OTAs should not be treated as definitive, it can offer early insight into what may unfold later in the preseason.
Aside from Rodgers returning to the mix, the biggest headline surrounding the quarterbacks was Mason Rudolph being moved down the depth chart at the start of OTAs. Will Howard took reps with the second team, which could spell trouble for the longtime backup in Pittsburgh. Beginning this stage of the preseason process in the third spot may leave Rudolph with very little room to survive.
Notably, Howard opened OTAs as the second quarterback on the roster. That position could still change as practices progress, with competition expected to intensify among those behind Rodgers on the depth chart. Much of the situation will be decided during training camp, but Rudolph already finds himself at an early disadvantage. That could spell trouble for his chances going forward.
Pittsburgh Steelers OTAs might've shown the beginning of the end for QB Mason Rudolph
No one should be writing off Mason Rudolph’s chances of making the roster just yet, but this does represent the first red flag surrounding his future. Aaron Rodgers spoke highly of Rudolph’s presence in the quarterback room last season, which suggests he would like to see him remain with the team. That said, the Steelers will make the final decision, and there may not be enough room for him.
He is entering his seventh season in the NFL. Rudolph has never developed into a high-level starter, despite delivering occasional clutch moments as a backup. His recent demotion at the start of OTAs adds an intriguing storyline to follow. While the team would prefer to see Will Howard or Drew Allar take control as the backup, competing against a veteran with Rudolph’s experience won't be easy.
In reality, Rudolph’s only realistic path to remaining with the Steelers is if the team carries four quarterbacks on the roster, which seems unlikely.
If he does not make the final cut and return to the practice squad, he may need to look for an opportunity elsewhere. While the organization is familiar with him, the preference would be for one of the younger quarterbacks to secure the role. The first day of OTAs suggests that this may already be the direction the team is heading.
