The 2026 NFL schedule was released last week, giving us a full look at what lies ahead for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. On paper, it will not be an easy road, especially with a brutal six-game stretch that awaits them after their Week 9 bye week.

Because of that, the Steelers will need to take advantage of the more favorable part of their schedule early in the season and get off to a fast start. Stacking as many wins as possible before the bye week will be crucial if they want to put themselves in position to reach the postseason once again.

Pittsburgh Steelers must capitalize on a favorable early schedule to keep their playoff hopes alive

The Pittsburgh Steelers really do not have much room for a slow start this season and almost have no choice but to come out firing before their Week 9 bye week arrives. The biggest reason why is because of the brutal stretch that waits for them on the other side of the bye.

From Weeks 10 through 15, Pittsburgh is scheduled to face the Bengals, Eagles, Broncos, Texans, Jaguars, and Ravens in consecutive weeks. Regardless of how those teams ultimately perform this season, that is one of the toughest stretches on the Steelers schedule and has the potential to define their entire season.

If the Steelers enter that part of the schedule hovering around .500 or already trying to dig themselves out of an early hole, things could get ugly fast. That is why taking advantage of the first half of the season is going to be so important. Before the bye week, Pittsburgh has a much more manageable slate with games against the Falcons, Patriots, Bengals, Browns, Colts, Buccaneers, Saints, and Browns. There are definitely winnable games in that stretch, and the Steelers need to capitalize on them while they can.

At the absolute minimum, Pittsburgh probably needs to head into the bye week at 5-3 to feel good about where they stand. If they can go 6-2 or even better, then they would put themselves in an excellent position before entering the toughest portion of their schedule. That does not guarantee anything, but it would give them some breathing room once the competition ramps up significantly after the bye.

The Steelers simply cannot afford to ease into the season or spend the first month trying to figure things out. We have seen in past years how costly slow starts can become, especially in a loaded AFC where every game matters. If Pittsburgh struggles early and enters that six-game gauntlet without momentum, many people will quickly start questioning whether this team is even capable of making the playoffs or finishing with a winning record.

From the very beginning of training camp and throughout the preseason, this team needs to look prepared and ready to go immediately. There is very little margin for error with how the schedule is set up, and getting off to a fast start could end up being the difference between returning to the postseason or watching it from home.
