One man’s trash is often someone else’s treasure. The age-old mantra applies to life in the NFL - especially during a competitive roster rebuild. The Pittsburgh Steelers want to remain relevant while rebuilding the foundation. It’s a risky procedure that requires focus and help along the way. Luckily, Mike McCarthy’s staff has an ear to the ground searching every day to build an impressive roster for the upcoming campaign.Â
There’s been value in every addition Pittsburgh’s made thus far. And I believe Mekhi Becton is another asset worth considering.
Experience is golden currency in most professions. Well, this former first-round pick already has plenty under his belt. Becton is a Super Bowl champion and former All-Pro while only in year six of his career. Significant contributions during his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 added hardware and recognition to the front end of a dominant career. A transition to right guard opened rushing lanes for Saquon Barkley, who eventually broke the all-time single-season rushing record, including playoffs  (2,504).Â
I won’t deny Becton’s dominance during a pivotal stretch, even if he’s struggled to maintain his reputation the following season.Â
In 2025, the Los Angeles Chargers agreed to a two-year, $20 million deal with the championship-level guard. But unfortunately, the results were not the same. Becton ranked 72nd among 81 offensive guards in Pro Football Focus' pass block grading (45.2). He also allowed 37 pressures, three sacks, and seven quarterback pressures.
The Pittsburgh Steelers can use a motivated saftey blanket like OG Mekhi Becton
The decline was more than noticeable.Â
It led to a swift dismissal while providing the market with a savvy lineman motivated for a second chance.Â
The Pittsburgh Steelers are not desperate, but they could use additional help. Broderick Jones’s neck injury was a concern earlier in the off-season. Large enough to draft Max Iheanachor in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Health concerns and excuses will not be tolerated this season. Fans expect McCarthy’s team to be better than Mike Tomlin’s last run.Â
And the offensive line will have an important role to uphold. Without it, Aaron Rodgers is only an aging star. I believe he still has magic in the tank. But without protection, the old man will be vulnerable and frustrated.Â
Los Angeles cut the right guard, saving $9.7 million in cap space shortly after the new deal. It was a knee-jerk reaction to an avalanche of issues. Sure, Becton didn't fulfill expectations, but that happens sometimes. What’s more important will be how he handles the next gig. And truthfully, relocating to Pittsburgh does not sound bad.Â
If Omar Khan’s front office is serious about contending, it does not hurt to consider signing Becton to a franchise-friendly deal. One year to prove himself is enough for a player who’s previously met All-Pro expectations. The deal will cost Pittsburgh pennies compared to the heartbreak associated with an unsuccessful season. Investing in one more lineman isn’t the pretty move, but it may lead to a prosperous future.Â
