We know that Aaron Rodgers will be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2026, but looking beyond this season will create headaches. Rodgers claims this is his final year of professional football, and if that's true, the Steelers quarterback issue will return to the spotlight once more.

They have some potential options on the roster, but they could look for an outside hire once more.

Either of these scenarios will come to light when next offseason rolls around, but no one should rule out a free agent, draft pick, or trade choices from entering the realm of possibilities. Both Will Howard and Drew Allar could be reasonable outcomes as well if Aaron Rodgers leaves town after this campaign. The Steelers long awaited long-term quarterback plan will reemerge from the shadows.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback outcome for 2027 could come from various avenues

No one should anticipate anything other than the Steelers focusing on a veteran option to start in 2027 after Aaron Rodgers leaves. If the club makes it back to the postseason, they likely won't be able to help themselves from trying to "compete" for as long as they think is possible.

There could be some interesting free agent options and others who hit the trade block that could start for them.

In an ideal world, Will Howard proves himself as Aaron Rodgers' backup and earns a shot at being the starter next season. That would allow both him and Drew Allar a shot to be the potential long-term success story as the Steelers quarterback. Right now, he should be viewed as the most likely option currently on the roster to become the starter. All of this will hinge on how he performs this season.

The plan has always been to locate their franchise quarterback in a draft class full of talent. It might just be one year later than they had anticipated. Pittsburgh appears eager to find a young player high in the draft, and 2027 should have many big names who become available.

One of the biggest roadblocks will be moving into position to draft one of the top prospects at the position.

Again, we all know Aaron Rodgers has stated this is his last go-around, but he said something similar last year. The Steelers locker room likes him a ton, and he is reenergized with the organization. If this season becomes a massive success with Rodgers at the helm, he will probably flirt with the idea of a return. This is probably his final year in the NFL, but never say never with Rodgers in the fold.

You would love to see Drew Allar much higher on the list then this, but he is a massive project.

It could take another year or two before he has a shot at starting any games for the Steelers. Even at that point, his time to become a starter could have run out. Pittsburgh's coaching staff is rebuilding Allar from the ground up, so his chances of starting anytime soon appear rather slim, barring a miracle.
