3 players on Steelers roster bubble fans must scout during preseason finale tonight
By Tommy Jaggi
1. Kendrick Green, Center
Of the players in the hot seat, Kendrick Green might be feeling the most pressure of any of them. In the past, the Steelers have had a tendency to give high draft picks the benefit of the doubt. However, Green's former third-round status may not be enough to save his job at this point.
While Matt Canada found creative ways to use him as a fullback and H-back during training camp practices this August, that sort of gadgetry and yet to show up in an exhibition game. At this point, Green might need to prove that he has a niche elsewhere, as he simply has not been able to hold up at center. The problem is that the sand in the hourglass has nearly gone at this point.
This comes after the former Day 2 draft pick failed in 2022 as a guard. After flip-flopping positions along the interior offensive line since his rookie season in 2021, it's clear that Green just doesn't have the frame and will never have the strength to be anything more than a reserve offensive lineman for this team.
Fortunately for him, there isn't a lot of competition at the backup center position. However, the team might end up feeling more comfortable with Nate Herbig in this role, and it's worth noting that rookie Spencer Anderson has played well and showed position flexibility all over the offensive line. Green needs to light it up and give it a performance of a lifetime in the Steelers preseason finale tonight against the Falcons.
