Can Pittsburgh find another outside linebacker?

The Steelers shored up their depth at outside linebacker in the 2023 NFL Draft by selecting Nick Herbig from Wisconsin. They brought back a 2021 draft selection in Quincy Roche as well. But, to paraphrase Danny Ocean, do they need one more? Herbig should be an effective situational pass rusher, but the rookie could struggle on running downs against NFL-level talent. Roche played in 14 games with three starts in 2021 but only appeared in two games for six defensive snaps in 2022.

The Steelers know how dire things can become if T.J. Watt goes down with an injury. If the same were to happen with Alex Highsmith, the effects would not be as extreme but would still be very harmful. Even if both stay healthy for most of 2023, Pittsburgh still needs to find bodies that can effectively spell Watt and Highsmith to keep them at full strength in the most important situations.

Pittsburgh could use another veteran presence in the outside linebacker room, ideally one who is very good against the run. DeMarvin Leal could get some snaps at outside linebacker on obvious rushing downs, but some experience could be very useful to help the younger players.

Luckily, there are lots of options still available on the market. Leonard Floyd would probably command too much money as he is the best remaining option on the market. Some cheaper veteran options like Jadeveon Clowney, Trey Flowers, and Al-Quadin Muhammad could be in the cards.
