5 Steelers sleepers trying to steal a roster spot at training camp
With training camp just starting, there will be plenty of opportunities over the next several weeks for players to show they deserve a spot on the 53-man roster.
The Steelers have a couple of notable position battles heading into training camp that many should keep a close eye on. Those trying to steal a spot on Pittsburgh's roster must overcome the odds and find different ways to stand out in practice. Most experts don't believe these players have an overwhelming shot at making the team at the start of camp.
Because experts imagine their situation differently, it doesn't mean these Steelers cannot take a roster spot away from another.
Spencer Anderson
Keep your eye on the trenches during training camp as some depth pieces will have to steal a spot on the roster.
Spencer Anderson is on the outside looking in as he heads to camp. He was able to take a spot last time around, so he could repeat. A lot of his potential will depend on whether he can show he is an effective guard and center. If Anderson can show that, and maybe some ability at tackle, then the Steelers are going to find it nearly impossible to cut him.
Beanie Bishop
Many have Beanie Bishop as a strong option to make the final roster, but everyone shouldn't be so sure.
Bishop is an undrafted free agent who has performed well throughout the offseason activities. Pittsburgh should be cautiously optimistic about Bishop heading into training camp. They have little options at slot cornerback, so his stock is up in the early days of camp. He will have to earn his spot on the Steelers and overcome the odds of being an undrafted guy.
MyCole Pruitt
Will the black and gold keep four tight ends on their final roster?
Time will tell, but with how Arthur Smith likes to run his offense, the Steelers may keep four. If that becomes the case, then MyCole Pruitt and Rodney Williams will be the two battling it out for the final spot. Williams has to eventually either win a roster spot or get let go. Smith is familiar with Pruitt, but Williams is the better overall option for now, plus he is younger.
Tyler Matakevich
After being in Buffalo for the past four years, Tyler Matakevich has found his way back to Pittsburgh.
He was just signed recently, so his roster spot has to be earned. Matakevich remains one of the better special team players in the NFL, which will be crucial with the new rules this season. He will have to beat out guys like Mark Robinson, and other younger options to make the team. If he can continue to produce on special teams like he has, then he has a good shot at stealing the last opening at the position.
Dez Fitzpatrick
With the issues surrounding the receiver position in Pittsburgh, many can overcome the odds and make the roster.
One name many have put on the backburner at the start of training camp is Dez Fitzpatrick. He has been with the team for a little over a year now. Fitzpatrick has been up and down between the team and the practice squad since last season. There are not only spots available on the roster at receiver but starting vacancies to be filled.
