Justin Fields' mistake-free performance foreshadows shift in Steelers' offense

Many saw him as more of a running back than an elite NFL quarterback. However, his relocation to Pittsburgh has reignited his career, as he has quickly adapted to the system.

One of the most significant differences has been his protection of the football. In two games, Fields has shown a remarkable ability to avoid turnovers and extend plays. These are hallmarks of what Steelers fans have come to expect from their quarterbacks. His ability to scramble, while keeping his eyes downfield, has allowed him to make plays that many thought he wasn’t capable of.

Head coach Mike Tomlin isn't asking Fields to throw for 400 yards a game or break records through the air. Instead, he prefers Fields to manage the game and put the team in a position to win.

So far, Fields has done exactly that. In the Steelers' Week 2 victory over the Denver Broncos, Fields completed 13-of-20 passes for 117 yards and threw a key touchdown pass. It wasn’t a stat line that would make headlines, but it was effective. 

More importantly, Fields connects with his Pickens early and often. His deep-threat receiver continues to defeat established defenders - earning yards via big plays. His ability to hit big plays downfield haunted the Patrick Surtain II and the secondary.

Penalties against Pittsburgh's offensive line erased a 51-yard completion and a touchdown. However, the defense had no choice but to move with caution. Sunday's performance showcased Fields' growth and development as a young quarterback. He is not just surviving—he thrives within Arthur Smith's system.

Justin Fields’ play is a breath of fresh air for Steelers fans. He doesn’t need to be spectacular. His steady hand, improved decision-making, and ability to extend plays are exactly what this Pittsburgh team needs to continue their early-season win streak.
