It might not be the outcome the Pittsburgh Steelers desire, but they could need talent from the United Football League to round out their team. Aaron Rodgers is still contemplating his decision to sign with the club. While he makes Omar Khan and Mike Tomlin wait, the UFL could be a perfect spot for the roster to find upgrades at quarterback and other areas of concern.
Week 5 of the UFL wrapped up as the 2025 NFL Draft was in full bloom. It was a weekend of action that saw many quality performances. These spring football players are doing their best to earn another opportunity when NFL training camps arrive. Khan and Tomlin have signed talent from spring leagues before. It wouldn't surprise many if the Steelers dove back into that talent pool.
They might not wow anyone when they get to camp, but Pittsburgh could use some competition at positions they failed to address at the draft.
The Pittsburgh Steelers could use the UFL as a final plan to fill positional needs after the NFL Draft
Bryce Perkins, QB, Michigan Panthers
Everything around the Steelers' final spot at quarterback hinges on Rodgers' decision.
If Rodgers signs with the Steelers, they will have four arms for training camp and no need for the position. Rodgers' refusal to sign with Pittsburgh before training camp could make things interesting. The United Football League might not have an NFL starter, but they have capable guys to push for roster spots. Bryce Perkins is in the middle of a UFL MVP race and deserves the hype.
The Michigan Panthers couldn't win despite Perkins' terrific effort. It was an exciting matchup that saw plenty of lead changes. The Panthers quarterback was efficient, going 21-25 on his passing attempts and compiling 235 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Perkins remains a threat in the UFL and could be a fantastic addition to the Steelers if Rodgers doesn't sign the dotted line.

Anthony Hines III, LB, D.C. Defenders
It was a productive week for offenses in the United Football League. Most defenses struggled, but Anthony Hines III was a bright spot. He combined for 11 tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss. He caused havoc during the D.C. Defenders' Week 5 victory over the Arlington Renegades. Hines III covered the entire field and remained a thorn in the side of Arlington's explosive offense.
Pittsburgh has plenty of inside linebackers, especially after they drafted Carson Bruener in the seventh round. There are potential issues at the position with Mark Robinson failing to show strides and Cole Holcomb returning from a debilitating injury. If either of those two struggles at training camp, having Hines III as an option to compete for a roster spot would help the Steelers.
Jordan Ta'amu, QB, D.C. Defenders
With the same logic in mind about Perkins, without Rodgers, Pittsburgh could consider signing a UFL star. Not many players have been strong spring football veterans. Jordan Ta'amu has been one of those guys. He has been the starter for the Defenders since 2023 and has produced mixed results. His Week 5 performance in a massive 37-33 victory was outstanding.
This veteran signal-caller carried the Defenders on his back to secure a win.
Ta'amu continues to attempt to stick in the NFL after two failed attempts to return. He is a solid veteran with plenty of playing experience who provides some mobility with his game. His Week 5 performance might've been one of the best in United Football League history after he threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns. He added 37 rushing yards and an extra score with his legs.
