With countless changes for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the offseason, it's easy to forget which free agents left town. One of those players was James Pierre, and the veteran got a nice pay bump to sign with the Minnesota Vikings. It was a good move on his part, and the Vikings get a cornerback who can play multiple roles.
It was a tough loss for the Steelers, but it might not be the end of the world.
For those who don't remember, this isn't the first time James Pierre has left Pittsburgh as a free agent. He signed with the Washington Commanders in 2024, but he failed to make their roster. He rejoined the Steelers and found a path not only to stick with the team, but to start meaningful snaps. He should do better this time around as a free agent, but there could be trouble on the horizon.
There is a reason why the Steelers refused to meet Pierre's asking price. The veteran showed that he can play at a high level in sheltered situations. He hasn't figured things out in the NFL. It would be hard to imagine a scenario where Pierre lives up to the contract that Minnesota is paying him. At the end of the day, he's a special teams ace who had a strong stretch last season.
Pittsburgh Steelers loss of CB James Pierre as a free agent might be a blessing in disguise
After letting James Pierre walk away as a free agent, the Steelers made a shift to invest in their secondary. This offseason saw them get active by signing Jamel Dean and adding Daylen Everette through the draft. Both players should be tremendous upgrades over Pierre. Overall, Pittsburgh's roster of cornerbacks appears ready to show they are much improved compared to last season.
When your defense is counting on Pierre to be a strong starter on game days, you are in a tough spot.
You have to give Pierre credit, as he found ways to consistently succeed at his job when called upon. His play during the final chunk of games to conclude the season was an admirable effort. It allowed him to make some money as a free agent, even though it might not last the full term.
The Vikings signed James Pierre to a two-year, $8.5 million contract to help boost their secondary. While that might not seem like a ton of money, it could sour in a hurry if he cannot contribute in a positive manner as a cornerback. Paying him solely as a special teams contributor is something Minnesota didn't have in mind when they brought him into their organization.
Perhaps the biggest concern that has always followed Pierre is his lack of speed since entering the NFL. He is already slow, and at his age, that won't be getting any better. The Steelers have seen from him time and time again that his lack of speed causes issues. Pierre found ways to limit that last season, but don't be shocked if he struggles to stick as a potential starter for the Vikings.
