3 free-agent leftovers the Steelers should sign at bargain rates

Not every free agent signed during the initial wave of free agency works out. Those who sign massive contracts often suffer unfortunate fates. Pittsburgh hasn't done much in free agency outside the D.K. Metcalf trade. Not every "big" move in free agency has to be headlining news to make an impact.

The Steelers have made some additions to the organization. They still have some cap room left, but if they sign Aaron Rodgers, that cash will dry up. Expect Steelers general manager Omar Khan to keep his options open in free agency. It's unlikely for the club to address every remaining need during the upcoming draft. They could rely on some cheap veteran contracts to round out their roster.

Pittsburgh could remain active in free agency this offseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could sign these discount free agents

Robert Woods, Wide receiver

A young receiving core needs leadership, and Robert Woods could be perfect.

He might not be the same player he once was, but Woods can still play quality snaps. The veteran receiver will enter his 13th year in the NFL and will be 33 in April. His age has slowed down his game, but he remains a versatile route runner. Versatility has grown Woods's game since he can play in the slot and outside. The veteran is used to playing different roles.

Pittsburgh should consider offering this free agent a contract. The Steelers have shown pre-draft interest in countless players at the position, but they need some character guys to round out the room. Woods was rumored to the Steelers last preseason as a possible trade target. The veteran only started four games last season, but he would be a nice addition in a depth role.

Arthur Maulet, Cornerback

He became a cap casualty of the Baltimore Ravens, but Arthur Maulet could form a reunion in Pittsburgh. He joined the Steelers in 2021 and was in and out of the lineup as the slot cornerback until 2022. He wasn't a perfect player, but he was good enough in that role. They already signed Brandin Echols, but they should add another veteran to push for the starting job.

Beanie Bishop produced some great numbers in the turnover margin as a rookie, but he got exposed countless times in coverage. Having Echols and Bishop as the only starting options in training camp could continue the revolving door at slot cornerback. Bringing Maulet back to the Steelers would be wise for both parties, as the veteran cornerback struggles to stay on the field.

Mo Alie-Cox, Tight end

They tried to get Kyle Juszczyk earlier in free agency, but he ran back to the 49ers. Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith likes tight ends and fullbacks in his offense. With MyCole Pruitt sitting as a free agent, don't be shocked if the team tries to sign another veteran. They could use another blocking option to help their run game's efficiency.

Mo Alie-Cox has spent his entire 8-year career with the Indianapolis Colts. The veteran tight end won't make a ton of catches for your offense, but he has become a reliable blocker. Smith will love that, and it would make sense for him to want Alie-Cox in his offense. The Steelers could use another blocking option. There are far worse choices than adding this free agent.
