The Pittsburgh Steelers are solidifying a sturdy future. That mission forced the front office to shake off old habits that kept the franchise from making aggressive decisions. As a result, the roster looks much improved. But there is still more work to complete before fans feel fully content.

And with quarterback depth remaining a lingering concern, I would not be surprised if Omar Khan showed interest in Brendan Sorsby during the Supplemental Draft expected to be held in late July.

That is not good news for Mason Rudolph.

Quarterback concerns have become a revolving topic in Pittsburgh. Without a true face of the franchise behind center, the Steelers have relied on aging veterans to bridge the gap. Aaron Rodgers was brought in to keep the franchise relevant and competitive. Meanwhile, Rudolph added experience to a depth chart that needed stability.

But now, with Will Howard and Drew Allar on board, how much longer can we expect Rudolph to take up space on the roster? Especially if a projected first-round talent becomes available at a discounted price.

It is hard to ignore the value Sorsby could provide in the Supplemental Draft. He was viewed as a potential first-round prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft class before off-field issues complicated his path. Analysts have raved about his size, arm strength, and dual-threat capabilities.

Yes, I still believe Sorsby would need time to adjust to NFL speed like most rookies. But his readiness is apparent enough to create interest.

That should be music to Pittsburgh’s ears.

The Pittsburgh Steelers' potential interest in Brendan Sorsby could soon mean the end for Mason Rudolph

If Khan wants to add another rookie quarterback with tremendous upside, he would have to make edits to the current roster. Rudolph should be the first player placed near the chopping block. Sure, he provides Pittsburgh with a valuable QB2 option. He was also drafted by the Steelers in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and has become a reliable second option when called upon.

But reliable does not always mean irreplaceable.

Rudolph has not shown enough to become the bridge gunslinger this franchise needs. Pittsburgh’s long-term plan is obvious. They want to groom their next quarterback under Rodgers before eventually handing over the keys. Howard and Allar already represent two attempts at finding that answer.

If Sorsby is as good as analysts believe, why not take the calculated gamble?

Acquiring the former Texas Tech Red Raider would force Pittsburgh to use one of its seven 2027 NFL Draft selections in a blind bid. But if the front office already planned to evaluate the 2027 quarterback class, Sorsby could offer a shortcut worth exploring. He is young, talented, and motivated to prove that his path to the league was simply delayed, not destroyed.

That is where Rudolph’s nightmare could become reality.

Finding a trade partner for Rudolph would help Pittsburgh kill two birds with one stone. The Steelers could gain additional draft capital while creating room for a quarterback with higher upside. It would also give Rudolph a chance to land somewhere with a clearer opportunity.

Pittsburgh cannot afford to waste roster spots out of loyalty. If Sorsby becomes available and the price is right, Rudolph might be the odd man out.

And honestly, that might be the bold move this quarterback room needs.
